Did there use to be a town under part of Lake Quachita around Hot Springs, AR?

I was told that when they broke up all the lakes in the area and dammed up the river and they made people move out so they could flood the areas where towns were for the water. I know this was very common back in the 1800′s but I was wondering if it was actually true.

I think it was actual houses and it was in the 1800′s when it was flooded. I don’t think there were any resorts there at that time. Just homes and shops.

It is suppose to be several hundred feet under water

It was also Lake Quachita area….or lake Degray..something like that in that area

  1. I hope you mean Lake Ouachita, because that’s what I researched.

I didn’t find anything about dams being built in the area at ALL during the 1800s, although due to prolific flooding each spring (maybe this is where the story came from?), there were several surveys done for dam construction; the first dam for the lake was apparently built in the 1920s.

    Hope this helps!

  2. Lake Ouachita was created by damning the Ouachita River in 1955. But I can’t find any info on whether or not towns were destroyed to create the lake.
