Looking for an apartment..and need some advice..?

I’m looking for a cheap apartment in the Russellville, AR area and am unsure of where to start. I’ve found a few websites but they either have none listed or have listings for apartments that are outrageously overpriced. Does anybody know of a legit website, paper, or ANYTHING to help me find what I’m looking for? Thanks!

Craigslist is always a good place to start.

Just look in the yellow pages and go to places near you and check them out. Ask for a tour and a sheet with the descriptions and the prices for each type of apartment (ie ground floor, 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms, townhouse, etc). How much is the deposit? How long is the lease? Can you go on month to month after the first lease is up? Do they charge first and last month’s rent on top of the deposit to start? Do they have any “free month’s rent” specials?

Check out if they are on the busline, if they have a laundry room or pool or tennis courts, etc. Are they close to the freeway? That may save time getting to work or shopping or family visits. Are they close to favorite places where you like to hang out (dining, shopping, work, etc) ?? Take all this into account. It is easier to take groceries down to a lower level apartment than upstairs, but also when you are on a ground level, you might hear people walking around upstairs and think it is cooler and darker (but the ground might insulate and cut heating and cooling bills). How much do the average heating and cooling bills run? Is water included in the rent or how much does that run on average billing? Is it gas or electric heat (gas heat may feel warmer)? Is it HUD apartments that charge based on your income? Are there hookups in the apartment for a washer/dryer if you want one? Do they allow pets if you want one? It might cost not too much more for an extra bedroom, which might come in handy if you decide later to take a roommate…and it is nice for extra storage room for a sewing machine or arts and crafts or computer area.

Bottom line is whether the rent is affordable (maybe about 1 week’s pay) and whether you get a good feeling that you LIKE the place and will be happy there.

On the internet look up your local newspapers. Go to their classified ads, search for what you are looking for. Some larger newspaper you can set up an email notice when ads are listing for what you are looking for.
