Lately I have been hearing the saddest stories of animal abuse in AR. The latest was about a family who’s small dog (I can’t remember the exact breed) went missing. About a week later, the dog made it back to it’s family, but someone had skinned the poor thing alive. They took it to a vet, but there was nothing they could do…
Also today my friend called me to tell me she was stopped by the side of the interstate because there were two abandoned dogs. One was so weak from starvation it could barely walk, and the others tail had been recently cut off, and its jaw was broken so bad it couldn’t move it.
I am fed up with people in general and it breaks my heart to hear about these kinds of things. WHAT CAN I DO to help???? My local animal shelter has so many volunteers from the local college that they told me they really wouldn’t have anything for me to do. Also, I don’t have very much money, but if you know of an organization that actually helps animals, or anything in or around the Russellville/Conway area of Arkansas, please let me know!
Animal cruetly will never stop completely, there will always be some lowlife pathetic person who feels the need to hurt animals that are smaller and better creatures than them. Cowards really.
All you can do is help out shelters any way you can, be it cleaning up poo or taking dogs for walks, they’ll always need a volunteer! Also, maybe make some sort of awareness campaign, like posters and tell people to help out the shelters etc. etc. Maybe a garage sale? All procedes to your local shelter! Anything is always welcome to shelters.

be a foster mom for dogs that would otherwise be euthanized.
Start a fund raiser to support your local shelter.
Start a shelter of your own.
there are lots of things people can do, but most of them require alot of work.

Look all around you. Usually there are animal shelter donation boxes around cash registers at the supermarket, restaurants, gas stations and the like.
Put some spare change in there, every little bit counts.
If you find dogs abandoned like the ones your friend saw, call animal control. They can go to shelters if they are salvageable.

You could look for other shelters to help out with. Donate items to shelters to help them out. You can also report these animals you see to the SPCA, AC&C, or any other animal services in your area, so they can get the animals off the streets. Even if it means they have to be humanely put to sleep. You would know you did the right thing.
Depending on how old you are. Some shelters hold BINGO nights to help raise money for the shelter and they sometimes don’t have enough help there.

Don’t volunteer at an animal shelter. Make your own anti-animal abuse organization! You have the power to. You don’t need to start with much money. Even something like making others aware of what’s going on is a start. Everyone also knows somebody in some business that they can get to help them. Not financially, but publicity wise.Maybe you know some one looking for an article to write about, whether it be in a newspaper or on a website. I know some places have bulletin boards, such as libraries, where they let you hang ads and help organization info. Don’t just go and do stuff someone is already doing. Do something new!

Sometimes I am embarrassed to be of the same species as some of these people who treat animals that way. I can only hope Karma exists.
As for helping, I’m usually tight on money too, so I collect items that shelters need (ie. blankets, towels, empty medicine bottles, etc.) from neighbors, craigslist, and freecycle…and then I drop those items off at the shelters. You got a lot of good suggestions above, just wanted to throw in one more!
