Flash was adopted from the racetrack in West Memphis, AR two years ago this summer. Weather permitting, we go to the doggie park as much as is possible. He has never learned to play. He will chase the other dogs running after a ball, frisbee, etc, but will never try to pick the object up himself. I have tried teaching him how to play in the back yard, but he doesn’t respond. Any ideas?
Is lure coursing bad for them? When Flash was adopted we had to sign papers saying he would never race again. Does this get too close to “racing”? I’ve heard of groups getting together to do lure coursing but don’t know much more than that.

Lately I have been hearing the saddest stories of animal abuse in AR. The latest was about a family who’s small dog (I can’t remember the exact breed) went missing. About a week later, the dog made it back to it’s family, but someone had skinned the poor thing alive. They took it to a vet, but there was nothing they could do…

Also today my friend called me to tell me she was stopped by the side of the interstate because there were two abandoned dogs. One was so weak from starvation it could barely walk, and the others tail had been recently cut off, and its jaw was broken so bad it couldn’t move it.

I am fed up with people in general and it breaks my heart to hear about these kinds of things. WHAT CAN I DO to help???? My local animal shelter has so many volunteers from the local college that they told me they really wouldn’t have anything for me to do. Also, I don’t have very much money, but if you know of an organization that actually helps animals, or anything in or around the Russellville/Conway area of Arkansas, please let me know!
